Songfestival

On the 20th of July we will enjoy our annual Song festival.
Every school year, this occasion offers great opportunity to discover musical talent in our school, and to have lots of musical fun together.
Each group can have only one act to compete in the festival, because of this we need to have audition rounds.
These auditions will be held in the classes in the week of 11th of July.

The programme:

Head lice

The health and environment board have adapted the head lice protocol for schools in March 2011.We use this new protocol to prevent and exterminate head lice at our school. We are more than welcome to inform you about the adapted protocol.  What will change?Airtight packaging and using a lice cape/sack has proven to be of no use.Because lice only move via hair on hair contact we need to treat the source/person with head lice and the children that have gotten in contact with the source.

How do you treat head lice?

1. USE A PEDICULOCIDE. Always read and follow the label carefully. If there are any cuts or abrasions on the scalp, do not use. Never use a pediculocide on an infant or anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. Shampoo over the sink, not the tub or shower. You may apply a second application of the pediculocide 8 to 10 days later to be sure all nits have been killed, but if two treatments do not get rid of the lice, do not apply another OTC product to your child's scalp. The lice may be resistant to the product. Instead, you may want to call your doctor. He or she may recommend another type of treatment.

2. OLIVE OIL TREATMENT. Olive oil smothers any lice that survive the pediculocide. Olive oil smothers and kills active head lice. It makes nit removal easier and re-moisturizes the scalp after the pediculocide. Part the hair and apply oil directly on scalp. Massage and saturate scalp. Leave oil on for 8 hours. Cover hair with shower cap and tie in place with a bandana. If you wash oil off too soon, lice can come back to life. They can hold their breath for several hours. Thus, it is important to leave the oil on for 8 hours. Then comb through and remove any lice and nits.

3. CLEAN ENVIRONMENT. Don't worry about turning your house upside-down in an effort to get rid of lice. Such efforts are unnecessary. Lice depend on human blood to survive and typically die within 24 hours without a host. Lice may, however, get caught in a hairbrush, comb or headband, so wash hair care items and accessories in hot water (130'F). Likewise, lice may be trapped, for example, when towel-drying hair. Towels used after showers or washing the hair are one of the most likely places to find lice. Launder recently used clothes, towels and bedding materials in hot water (130'F) or tumble in a dryer on high heat. If your child sleeps with a special stuffed animal or blanket, wash it in hot water (130'F), too, or place in a dryer on high heat. You don't need to place stuffed animals in plastic bags for several weeks. Routine cleaning is sufficient. Vacuum rugs, carpets, chairs and couches, pillows, bed mattresses, car seats. Wash coats, scarves, hats and mittens, washable rugs, sheets, blankets, and pillowcases. Off the head, adult lice usually cannot survive for more than a day or two. Nits off the hair will die within hours of hatching if they cannot find a meal, so, there is no point in cleaning every nook and cranny.

4. COMB OUT THE NITS. THE MOST IMPORTANT ACTIVITY IN LICE TREATMENT IS NITPICKING. If lice show up again after you treat, it is usually because nits or newly hatched licewere not removed. This happens often because some of the lice are so small they can only be seen under a microscope. Part out thin sections of hair (no wider than the comb). If you find a nit, grasp nit with your thumb and forefinger fingernails and deposit onto a tissue. Pin back each section of hair after removing the nits. After picking all the lice and nits you can see, rinse the hair with water to wash out any loose nits. PICK THE NITS TWICE A DAY FOR TWO WEEKS, EVEN IF YOU DO NOT SEE NITS! IF YOU DO NOT PICK NITS REGULARLY,NOTHING ELSE YOU DO WILL WORK!

At school we will treat every child in each group at the same time to ensure the best treatment and to prevent the Head lice from spreading.

From the LOES office: Raising your kids, know your pitfalls.

Are  you experiencing regular struggles with your child or are you ashamed of public tantrums?Sometimes it feels like playing the police officer is the only way of getting your child to cooperate. You  might be prone to give in to your child just to stop the hassle. It is not always easy for partners to agree on one equal approach. If the situations described above take place frequently and you have run out of ways to handle the situation, you might have fallen into a parental pitfall.A parental pitfall is a repeated reaction to the same unwanted behaviour which doesn’t work or solves your problems. The different views on raising your children could be a pitfall you and your partners could fall into.Your own ideas and upbringing also play a big role in how you handle your children. You might form a pattern without you being aware you do so.Every family faces occasional pitfalls, but if they take over your happy family life and cause stress they might affect your child’s development. If negative interaction rules your household then your child may develop behavioural problems.

The LOES office wishes to inform you on the most frequent pitfalls, which may stop you from falling into them.

The escalation

If you and your child are involved in a regular power struggle it is easy to fall into the abyss of negativity. Making threats or counting off often doesn’t work and only leaves you tired and your child feeling rejected. The behaviour of your child increases and your anger increases as well.Escalations like these ask for a new approach.

 Ignoring good behaviour

This pitfall is often combined with the latter. If you are in a negative spiral with your child it might be difficult to see better days.Your child’s good behaviour is ignored or taken for granted.Behaviour that is not praised or stimulated will disappear if you do not give it the attention it deserves. The good behaviour makes place for unwanted behaviour, which of course draws attention even if it isn’t positive. It is attention none the less.

The ideal parent

If you want to be a perfect parent you have your work cut out for you.Raising kids is a bumpy road you are on, falling and standing up, making mistakes and learning from them as you go.Holding on to the perfect picture will cause disappointment, guilt and feeling inadequate.

The sacrificial parent

Some parents put all their energy into their child’s development.Their child’s needs are secondary to their own.It is important to make time for each other, to have fun with or without the kids. The quality of parenting stands with the quality of the relationship.

Less stress, more fun!The triple P programme of the LOES office helps you to steer clear of pitfalls and to bring back the fun in parenting. More information can be found on www.loes.nl where you can ask questions online.Personal contact is possible by calling 053-4307022 or by visiting the Loes office in the library at the Pijpenstraat in Enschede between 13.00-17.00hrs.
